Abstract
Bojni brodovi su uslijed svoje kombinacije svojstava u pogledu velikog kalibra glavnog naoružanja broda, velike količine oklopne zaštite te brzine redovito bili najmoćniji ratni brodovi na bilo kojem morskom ratištu. Kao odgovor na neprijateljski bojni brod se redovito slao vlastiti bojni brod. Tijekom Drugog svjetskog rata sve pomorske sile su koristile bojne brodove. Jedan od najpoznatijih bojnih brodova Drugog svjetskog rata je bio njemački bojni brod Bismarck. Unatoč ograničenjima i restrikcijama koje su bile postavljene Versajskim ugovorom i Pomorskom Konferencijom u Washingtonu, Bismarck je bio najveći i najmoćniji bojni brod na svijetu u trenutku svog porinuća, prema riječima Winstona Churchilla: "Remek djelo mornaričke konstrukcije". Uslijed geopolitičke situacije u Europi 1940. / 1941. godine, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo je u potpunosti ovisilo o prekooceanskim opskrbnim konvojima. Zadatak bojnog broda Bismarck je bilo uništavanje upravo tih komercijalnih konvoja. Tijek Bismarckove misije pod imenom Operacija Rheinübung otkrit će novu silu na morskim ratištima u vidu nove vrste kapitalnog broda, nosača zrakoplova.
Abstract (english)
As a result of combination of big caliber main guns, large amount of armour protection and speed, battleships were readily the mightiest warships on any seabound war front. As a response to an enemy battleship, friendly battleships were ordinarily deployed.During the Second World War all global naval powers used battleships. One of the most famous battleships of the Second World War was German battleship Bismarck. Despite the restrictions and limits that were imposed by the Treaty of Versailles and the Washington Naval Conference, Bismarck was the biggest and most powerful battleship in the world at the time of her launch, in the words of Winston Churchill: "A masterpiece of naval construction". Due to geopolitical situation of Europe in years 1940. / 1941. , United Kingdom was completely dependant on transatlantic supply convoys. The mission of battleship Bismarck was to destroy these very same commercial convoys. The flow of Bismarcks mission named Operation Rheinübung will reveal a new force on seabound war fronts in the form of a new type of a capital ship, an aircraft carrier.
