Abstract (english) | An electric tram in Dubrovnik connected Dubrovnik with Gruž, which was not an integral part of the city at the time. The first steps taken to realize the idea of a tram were the construction and start of operation of a power plant in Dubrovnik, on June 1, 1901. Then, in 1905, the Committee for the Construction of the Electric Tram was established. The installation of the rails was completed in 48 working days, which was a great delight. Traffic began on December 22, 1910. There were two tram lines, the line from Pile to the station (railway station) and the line from Pile to Lapad. Passengers entered the tram at the rear and exited at the front platform, while passengers entered the trailer from all sides. For the people from Dubrovnik, the tram was one of the symbols of the city and definitely something that the citizens remember with enthusiasm, especially those who had the opportunity to ride in it. The fact that the tram has been running for a full 60 years is something big, and especially the fact that everything, whether good or bad, the tram has gone through during its long service life. Unfortunately, due to wear and tear and brake failure, on March 7, 1970, a traffic accident occurred in which a No. 5 tram car derailed. Fourteen people were injured and one passenger was killed. The accident was definitely the trigger for the cessation of tram traffic, which happened on March 20, 1970, when the tram made its last run. Although as a result of modernization, development of tourism and various other things, the tram left the streets of Dubrovnik forever, it will never leave the memory of the citizens and cease to be one of the symbols of the city of Dubrovnik. |
