The beggining of motherhood and the ending of pregnancy represents a challenge and because of it it's normal that after giving birth the mother feels tired and moody, especially if the birth didn't go as planned e.g. caeserean delivery. Most women won't admit having negative emotions because they have fear what society may think and because their family is putting all that pressure on them to aceept motherhood which to them represents an obstacle they don't know how to solve. What society doesn't know is that 80 percent of women experience negative emotions related to childbirth but they won't talk about it because of the stigma that is associated with postpartum depression. Postpartum depression is a name for group of disorders which include postpartum sadness or baby blues, postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis. The lack of education and knowledge leads to postpartum depression not being diagnosed enough and that can put the mother and the baby in grave danger if she doesn't begin her treatment on time. Nowdays postpartum depression can be diagnosed with the help of screening tests and after visiting a psychiatrist who will set the diagnosis. Treatment depends on the stage of the disorder; symptoms of postpartum sadness pass by themselves in a few days, postpartum depression is treated with antidepressants and psychotherapy and postpartum psychosis is treated with antipsychotics and other forms of treatments that we will mention later. With the help of multidisciplinary team and with the right treatment of medications and psychotherapy the patient can fully recover and take on the role of a mother of her child and be happy about it as she planned to be before the birth and the diagnosis.
