Anisakis spp. Dujardin, 1845 is a parasite that invades the intestines of marine fish and mammals. It is found in many economically important and marketable fish species that are in the form of L3 larvae, from which it is further transferred to marine mammals, where it develops to the adult stage. It causes a constant loss of energy that significantly affects host physiology and behavior. How severe the changes are depends on the amount of parasite and the life stage of the host. Humans can become infected by consuming infested fish, but are accidental hosts because transfer of the parasite to humans cannot result in a complete life cycle of the parasite. The aim of this study is to analyze and verify the presence of this parasite in five commercial fish species from Dubrovnik fish market, namely in European hake (Merluccius merluccius Linnaeus, 1758), in sardine (Sardina pilchardus Walbaum, 1792), in Atlantic horse mackerel (Trachurus trachurus Linnaeus, 1758), in bogue (Boops boops Linnaeus, 1758) and in striped red mullet (Mullus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758). A total of 210 individuals ranging in total length from 11.4 to 45.9 cm were examined, of which 67 individuals in European hake and Atlantic horse mackerel were infested with the parasite Anisakis spp. while no parasites were found in the other three species.
