Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease which can affect one or multiple organs, and it can have an acute or chronic course. Symptoms of these diseases vary from mild manifestations on skin in some forms of cutaneous lupus erythematosus to severe organ damage in the systemic form of lupus. Etiology has not been fully elucidated, although environmental, biological and genetic factors are being investigated as possible causes or triggers. Treatment depends on the organs affected by the disease and with severity of the disease. As with any chronic illness, the patient develops a sense of uncertainty, a fear of its outcome, pain they endure, the course of treatment, the limitations in daily lifestyle that comes with this illness and the general acceptance of their health and therapy. Because of all these previously mentioned reasons it’s crucial to get help from a nurse/technician as a full member of the medical team who in addition to expertise,knowledge, professionalism and nursing skills need to support and understand the patient and his needs. Based on the anamnesis, clinical picture and laboratory tests the erythematous lupus is divided into: chronic cutaneous lupus, subacute cutaneous lupus and systemic lupus. In this final paper, we’ll describe the most common variants, clinical picture, etiology and epidemiology and diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines. Special attention will be paid to the role of the nurse / technician in the care of patients.
