Biljeg antičkog vremena ostavlja najprije Ilirsko Kraljevstvo, a potom i Rimsko Carstvo. Gotsko i bizantsko vrijeme donosi zatiranje gotovo svih povijesnih vijesti o Konavlima i njegovom ranom srednjem vijeku.
Abstract (english) Konavle region, with its geographical position, favorable climate conditions, protected relief structure and fertile ground, has always attracted all sorts of political entities that tried to subdue Konavle to their masters.
It also represents an important traffic connection between the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) world. For all these reasons Konavle region has been desirable to a large number of predecessors, and thus open to many local conflicts.
With the help of archeological findings, it was very easy to reconstruct the earliest political picture of Konavle. Numerous turmoils, conquests, sale or surrender of the land - which included larger and sometimes smaller political actors - prove Konavle Middle Ages to be, from the political perspective, the most active period. The crucial trace left by the ancient times is of the Illyrian Kingdom, and then by the Roman Empire.
Gothic and Byzantine times bring the extinction of almost all historical news about Konavle and its early Middle Ages. Dynamic historical events for the eastern part of Konavle ended in the year 1419, when people from Dubrovnik unveiled it from the Bosnian nobleman Sandalj Hranić.
The western part of the region was bought a bit later in history, in 1426, from Radoslav Pavlović. Konavle experienced the re-development of trade, the revival of traffic routes and the strengthening of Christianity only when it came under Dubrovnik rule. The importance of Konavle for Dubrovnik was high, primarily due to being a safe hinterland to foreign ships when sailing into and out of Dubrovnik. Then for easier control of the hinterland and defense against enemy attacks from the east. At that time, the people of Dubrovnik could not acquire property on Brač, Hvar and Korčula and focused all their attention on owning Konavle.
